Teacher Observation Process

The observation process and requirements differ based on a teacher’s employment status and whether they are covered under APPR.

Untenured Teachers

Untenured (probationary) teachers typically have three unannounced observations, each lasting approximately 15–20 minutes. A pre-observation conference is required, followed by a post-observation conference. The final observation report must be submitted within 5 school days. Specific observation dates and submission timelines apply to probationary teachers.

Tenured Teachers

Tenured teachers typically have one unannounced observation, lasting approximately 15–45 minutes. A pre-observation conference may be conducted in person or via email, followed by a required post-observation conference. Key dates and submission timelines may differ from those for untenured teachers.

Teachers Not Under APPR

Teachers who are not subject to APPR requirements follow a separate observation process. Their observation requirements, timelines, and documentation may differ from those outlined above. Please refer to the applicable district guidelines and contractual requirements for specific information.
